The course focuses on encounters and journeys from a global perspective in the early modern period. Looking at famous journeys and moments of exchange-when people from different parts of the world met and interacted-the course presents a variety of cases, ranging from violent encounters to displacements of people, adventurous journeys, issues of translation, and prestigious gift exchanges.
While the course offers a global approach to several economic and cultural issues, it will focus geographically on the Mediterranean, the New World, the African continent, the Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean. A number of lectures will focus on famous objects and museums.
