The course, held only in English, is structured according to four specific learning objectives:
- Historical Understanding: To provide students with a solid understanding of the evolution of the art market, from its origins in the Late Middle Ages to the present day. Students will be able to identify and analyse the main historical phases and changes in the economic, social and cultural dynamics of the art market.
- Analysis of Market Dynamics: In-depth study of the economic structures, supply and demand mechanisms and the main players (artists, dealers, collectors, auction houses, galleries, etc.) that have characterised the art market in different historical periods. Students will develop the ability to assess the impact of these actors on artistic practices and the value of works.
- Study of Historical Sources and Documents: Teaching the critical use of historical sources (such as contracts, inventories, letters, and sales records) for the reconstruction of market dynamics. Students will be trained in the analysis and interpretation of archival documents related to the art trade.
- Critical Analysis of the Contemporary Market: Offering a critical perspective on the contemporary art market, linking current dynamics with historical ones. Students will be able to assess the challenges and opportunities of the current market and understand the influence of globalisation and new technologies on buying and selling practices and the value of artworks.
