    Leonardo Della Salda got his degree in Vet. Medicine on December 18th, 1985. In 1987 he started his post-doctoral PhD fellowship within the Institute of General Pathology and Pathological Anatomy (University of Bologna). On November 1st 1988 he became a Researcher in General Pathology and Pathological Anatomy. From 1991 to 1993, he taught postgraduate courses in Pathological Anatomy and Health Inspection in Bologna. Since 1994 he has lectured in Veterinary Pathology at the University of Teramo. In September 1998 he was also appointed as an Associate Professor of Pathological Anatomy at the Veterinary School of the University of Teramo. On October 2nd 2000 he became "Full Professor" of Pathological Anatomy by the same University. From Academic year 2014/2015 he has held courses in Comparative Oncology in the degree course in Veterinary Medicine and at the "specialization school of Laboratory animals" at "University of Warmia and mazury"; Olsztyn; Faculty of veterinary medicine; Poland, in English. In September 1998 he obtained the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (five-year revaluation in 2023). He is "European Veterinary Specialist in Pathology" (EBVS) from 2019 until 2023. He is a member of specialized scientific societies in the field of ESVP pathology, AIPVet.  He is President of the "Italian Association of Human and Veterinary Dermatologists" (AIDUV) (from 2002 until today). He was President of the "Association of Italian Veterinary Pathologists" (AIPVet) until September 2016, and member of the Scientific Commission of the "Italian Society of Veterinary Sciences" (SISVET) until 2019. Referee for the journals Plos one, Journal of Veterinary Medicine Series A, BMC Cancer, Scandinavian veterinary Acta. Co-editor of the international journal Journal of Elementology since 2010 and 2014 he is a member of the scientific board of the Polish Journal of Natural Sciences. He is  member of the “Academy of Sciences of Abruzzo and the Adriatic Regions” since 2017. Scientific member of the Animal Welfare Body (OPBA) of the University of Teramo established with Rectoral Decree 70 of 23.02.2016 (UNITE). Special emphasis has been placed, since 1997 up to date, on research and training activities concerning oncology, as well as on research and training activities regarding the reproductive pathology, with special emphasis on the histopathology and the comparative studies with the human medicine. Relevant research and training activities have also concerned the ultrastructural pathology. He is author or co-author of numerous scientific papers (more than 90 in Pub Med),

     

    INFO ABOUT THE COURSE


    OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

    • Knowledge and understanding: This course aims to provide understanding of the pathological clinical manifestations of the reproductive system in domestic animals and humans, focusing on the pathogenesis of cell injury/death. Using the animal model, the student will acquire the necessary cytopreparation techniques to assess pathological reproductive structures.
    • Applying knowledge and understanding: After the course students will be able to apply their knowledge, understanding to demonstrate their ability to solve problems related to the biotechnology of reproduction multi disciplinary context in both the zoo technical field and in medically assisted procreation
    • Making judgements: Making judgement is developed through independent and group activities requiring an individual effort (self-evaluation tests) together with group (colleagues) comparison (laboratory exercises).
    • Communication: After the course students will be able to communicate clearly and concisely utilizing their conclusions, information, acquired knowledge, underpinning rationale, ideas, problems and solutions related to the topics covered by specialists and non-specialists. In particular, they will be able to present their conclusions on biotechnology issues in a logical, concise and rigorous manner and to communicate, using the appropriate technical-scientific language.
    • Learning skills: Students are expected to develop learning skills and strategies to enable them to study both continuously and independently the course content and library materials, consultation databases and other web information.

    PROGRAM 

    This course aims to provide understanding of the pathological clinical manifestations of the reproductive system in domestic animals and humans, focusing on the pathogenesis of cell injury/death. Using the animal model, the student will acquire the necessary cytopreparation techniques to assess pathological reproductive structures. The course is divided into two parts for practicality: Unit 1: Pathogenesis of cell injury/death and cytopreparation techniques  Unit 2: Diseases of the female reproductive system 


    UNIT 1: Pathogenesis of cell injury/death and cytopreparation techniques

    The unit aims to describe the morphological changes of cell injury/death, the process of apoptosis and principle of cytotechnique to reduce specimen to cellular presentation which can be interpreted and diagnosed, in particular of reproductive system. - Principle of cytotechnique - History of cytodiagnosis - Types of cytology samples - Evaluation of specimen - Staining Methods in Cytology - Techniques in Cytopathology - causes and pathogenesis of cell injury/death - describe the morphological changes of cell injury/death - process of apoptosis and necrosis


    UNIT 2: Diseases of the female reproductive system

    The female genital tract pathological clinical manifestations are studied and analysed. - Diseases of vulva and vagina - Diseases of utero - Diseases of tube and ovaries - Gestational and placental disorders

    • Knowledge and understanding: This course aims to provide understanding of the pathological clinical manifestations of the reproductive system in domestic animals and humans, focusing on the pathogenesis of cell injury/death. Using the animal model, the student will acquire the necessary cytopreparation techniques to assess pathological reproductive structures.
