    RESEARCH INTERESTS

    The research carried out by Prof. Valentina Russo focuses on Reproductive Biology and, in recent years, on the study of amniotic stem cells in Livestock Mammals. In particular, the main fields of study developed are:

    A) BIOLOGY OF REPRODUCTION

    B) AMNIOTIC STEM CELLS AND REGENERATIVE MEDICINE.

    Prof. Russo partecipates to national (FIRB-PRIN) and European (H2020-MSCA) funded projects:

    - PI in research unit in COFUND-DP-2015- REP-EAT 713714.

    - PI of the project H2020-MSCA-ITN-EJD-2020-P4 FIT.

    INFO ABOUT THE COURSE


    OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

    • Knowledge and understanding: This module aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the function of the reproductive system, focusing on the relationship between the structure and function of the female reproductive system in domestic animals and humans. Using the animal model, the student will acquire the necessary techniques to assess reproductive structures; in particular, those of the ovaries and female gamete.
    • Applying knowledge and understanding: After the course students will be able to apply their knowledge, understanding to demonstrate their ability to solve problems related to the biotechnology of reproduction multi disciplinary context in both the zoo technical field and in medically assisted procreation
    • Making judgements: Making judgement is developed through independent and group activities requiring an individual effort (self-evaluation tests) together with group (colleagues) comparison (laboratory exercises).
    • Communication: After the course students will be able to communicate clearly and concisely utilizing their conclusions, information, acquired knowledge, underpinning rationale, ideas, problems and solutions related to the topics covered by specialists and non-specialists. In particular, they will be able to present their conclusions on biotechnology issues in a logical, concise and rigorous manner and to communicate, using the appropriate technical-scientific language
    • Learning skills: Students are expected to develop learning skills and strategies to enable them to study both continuously and independently the course content and library materials, consultation databases and other web information.

    UNIT 1: Physiology of the female reproductive of domestic animals and women

    • Knowledge and understanding: The unit aims to describe the physiology of domestic animals and human female genital organs.
    • Applying knowledge and understanding: Applying knowledge and understanding of physiology of the female reproductive system are used in dissections performed in the Laboratory.
    • Making judgements: To be able to develop a critical approach and to elaborate and suggest structured concepts
    • Communication: To elaborate and suggest structured concepts
    • Learning skills: Develop themes aimed at a critical approach



    UNIT 2: Functional analysis of the structures contained within the gonad and the female gamete of domestic animals and women

    • Knowledge and understanding: Students will study; functional microscopic analysis and applied methodologies of the ovaries and the evaluation of the female gamete in domestic animals and women.
    • Applying knowledge and understanding: After the unit students must be able to apply their knowledge, understanding and ability to recognize the function of ovarian structures and the egg cell characteristics in the different growth phases. This ability shall be proved by solving operational questions that require skills in handling laboratory equipment and a good knowledge of methods/protocols used in the microscopic study of the female reproductive glandular portion
    • Making judgements: To be able to develop a critical approach
    • Communication: To elaborate and suggest structured concepts
    • Learning skills: Develop themes aimed at acquiring a critical approach



    UNIT 3: Laboratory protocol

    • Knowledge and understanding: Use of laboratory protocols in the female reproductive in domestical animals
    • Applying knowledge and understanding: This ability shall be proved by solving operational questions that require skills in handling laboratory equipment and a methods/protocols good knowledge used in the microscopic study of the female reproductive in domestical animals
    • Making judgements: To be able to develop a critic approach
    • Communication: To elaborate and suggest structured concepts
    • Learning skills: Develop themes aimed for critical approach
