Seminar in International History and Historical Methodology
Course Description
This course is a seminar-based, methodology-oriented exploration of the Atlantic Community from the end of World War II to the present. Rather than offering a comprehensive survey, the course is designed as a hands-on workshop in historical analysis, centered on the close reading and interpretation of primary sources related to US–European relations.
The seminar focuses on how political, diplomatic, and cultural actors on both sides of the Atlantic have constructed, debated, and contested the idea and practice of an Atlantic Community. Through systematic engagement with speeches, diplomatic records, policy documents, and contemporary commentary, students will learn how historical narratives are produced, how sources are framed and mobilized, and how competing interpretations emerge over time.
Each session functions as a source lab. Primary sources will be provided in detail in class and through the course platform, allowing students to focus on analytical and interpretive work rather than archival retrieval.
